School Meal Program (SMP)
The School Meal Program (SMP) is a landmark initiative of the School Education Department, Government of the Punjab, aimed at simultaneously improving child nutrition and strengthening educational outcomes. Under this programme, students enrolled in standalone primary schools across selected districts of Punjab are provided with free milk packs and fortified biscuits during school hours, ensuring access to essential nutrients at a critical stage of growth. By addressing malnutrition, the programme supports children’s physical and cognitive development, enhances concentration and classroom participation, and helps create a healthier learning environment. At the same time, the provision of milk packs serves as a strong incentive for parents to enroll and regularly send their children to school, particularly in underserved areas, contributing to improved attendance, retention, and overall access to education while laying a stronger foundation for lifelong learning.
